Finally the GameWorld series is complete. A journey that hit the SFF world in 2003 is finally over. Samit not only proved himself as the first-ever Indian-SFF-novel-in-English author, but also first-ever Indian-SFF-trilogy-in-English author successfully. Pitted with wit, an exquisite blend of concepts from virtually every fantasy sources in the world – his creation is by far one of the best reads that I have enjoyed (and I am yet to get my hands on the 3rd volume).
And then I was watching a small video snippet in IBNLive.com which covered one of the book release ceremonies for the 3rd volume (Unwaba Revelations). And I was startled to see the change in the “boy-wonder” of SFF. For all of those – who saw him before (like in 2002-2003 etc.) or, like me, saw only his pictures in places like Wikipedia, here’s what I am talking about.
This was Samit Basu (sometime in 2002 – 2003):
And this is him again – now, Jan 2008:
As you can see, a drastic change! Almost similar to the change in his literary maturity, his ability to write convincing and serious SFF, his popularity and growth in fan-following, and the flow of his story itself – the complexity of plot and unfurling of characters. With kudos to the master, I close this post by saying – a very personal comment – that even though the change in looks goes hand-in-hand with the changes in his literary maturity and fame, I think he perhaps can enjoy the old clean-shaven looks for a few more years still (say, till his 30’s start), before succumbing to the unkempt reality! Best wishes and best of luck.
